plan your journey: tips

When estimating your budget (> above), you can check how many days you will be on your way to, for instance, to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. An important milestone, as from there you will cross the Pyrenees.

When to cross the Pyrenees?
That's hard to say. One day, the weather can be beautiful, whereas the next day you cannot see a thing because of the fog and rain. In spring it can already be quite warm, but it can also still be cold and sometimes it can rain for days. Sometimes, in February, all the snow on the Route Napoléon has already melted. But, sometimes, the snow comes back in April. Even early in May, the route can be impassable because of the snow. In the summer it can be hot, but also gray and wet.
So basically, you just need some luck for a nice crossing . Before you set out, ask the pilgrim office, opposite our hostel, about the weather forecast and ... please do follow their advice.

When is the busy season in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port?
Many pilgrims start their Camino in Saint-Jean. But during the season the number of pilgrims who start in Saint-Jean can vary considerably. The pattern is roughly the same every year:

  • throughout the year there are pilgrims on the route, but the season really begins in mid-April and ends in late September.
  • peaks during the season are from mid-April to late May, and from early August to late September,
  • there is a remarkable dip during the season in the period from early June to late July.

Our advice: try to avoid the period late April / early May. During this time there is always a wave of pilgrims invading Spain from Saint-Jean. And many other pilgrims who start in Roncesvalles or Pamplona.

In the week from 6 to 14 July, Pamplona is always packed. The city celebrates San Fermín, the fiesta with the famous bull runs. It is very difficult to find a place to sleep and the prices shoot up.

Santiago de Compostela
In Santiago, the name day of Saint James is celebrated on July 25. The city always attracts a large crowd on that day and many pilgrims like to participate. Other pilgrims avoid the city for the same reason.
